Immigration has always played a key role in the economic growth of Canada. Lately, several questions have been raised by some critics and analysts regarding Canada’s immigration policy during the coronavirus pandemic.
Marco Mendicino, the Immigration Minister of Canada, has come forward and emphasized on the importance of immigration for Canada during the recent interviews with the media.
Mendicino recognizes the important contribution of the immigrants towards maintaining stable economic growth.
He believes that immigration will always remain an “enduring value” for the country.
The current economic crisis has engulfed the entire world and during this time, every country has its own policy for immigration. Several countries are lowering the rate of immigration. However, Canada is adopting a different policy by setting higher immigration targets and inviting candidates for permanent residence.

A large number of sectors of the Canadian economy are heavily dependent on immigrants. Even during the pandemic, Canada needs foreign workers in order to sustain the normal working of essential services such as hospitals, food supply chains, transportation, and others. Thus, Immigration helps Canada meet its labor market needs and spur economic activities.
As per the 2020-2022 Immigration Levels Plan, Canada had set a target to welcome 341,000 new permanent residents in 2020, increase to 351,000 in 2021, and by the year 2022, total new permanent residents could increase up to 390,000. So, Canada had set a higher immigration target which is around one percent of Canada’s total population.
The Immigration Minister has told the Canadian Media that the government has been doing its part to facilitate and improve the immigration process for permanent residents and foreign workers.
Canada has taken several reforms to help immigrants in response to the coronavirus pandemic. For example, the government has reduced the time taken to complete the formalities for temporary foreign workers. Now, they are allowed to start their new job within 10 days instead of the previous rule of 10 weeks.
