The province of British Columbia has a few immigration categories for international students. Students who hold a valid degree from a Canadian college or university are eligible for these immigration streams of the BC PNP.
However, as per the recent announcement, international students now require that only 50% of their studies is completed in Canada. So, if they have finished at least half of the studies from a Canadian institution, they are eligible to apply for a provincial nomination under the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program.
This means that they can finish up to half of their study program from their country of origin. Also, those who have completed their degrees in Canada but stayed in their home country due to the COVID-19 pandemic will still be eligible to apply to the BC PNP.
Foreign students who graduated before March 1, 2020, must have completed 50% of their course on-campus. And those who graduated on or after 1st March should have completed 50% of their studies either on-campus or off-campus while living in Canada.
Note: Students who have attended distance learning programs can not apply for a provincial nomination.
There are four ways through which international students become eligible to immigrate to British Columbia:
The Express Entry Stream of the British Columbia PNP is linked to the federal government’s Express Entry System. So, if you have an express entry profile and are eligible for one of the three economic class immigration programs, you can apply to the International Graduate and Post-Graduate categories of the BC Express Entry.
Skills Immigration is the other immigration stream for international graduates. International students can apply to the Skills Immigration stream if they do not have an express entry profile.
The requirements for the Skills Immigration are the same as that of the Express Entry B.C. In addition to the above-mentioned requirements, applicants must be graduated in the past three years, and they need to meet the language requirement set for a particular occupation. Also, they must be able to show that they can support their family and they have funds for themselves too.
